DEVELOPMENT OF THEORIES 


Theories are not discovered, they are created. A set of observable facts may exist, but they do not become a theory unless someone has the insight to understand the relevance of the observed information and pulls the facts together to make sense of them.
Certainly, many people observed apples falling from trees before Newton was stimulated to consider the force of gravity. Theories can be developed using inductive or deductive processes.

Inductive Theories

Inductive theories are data based and evolve through a process of inductive reasoning, beginning with empirically verifiable observations. Through multiple investigations and observations, researchers determine those variables that are related to a specific phenomenon and those that are not.



The patterns that emerge from these studies are developed into a systematic conceptual framework, which forms the basis for generalizations.
This process involves a degree of abstraction and imagination, as ideas are manipulated and concepts reorganized, until some structural pattern is evident in their relationship.


Deductive Theories



The alternative approach to theory building is the intuitive approach, whereby a theory is developed on the basis of great insight and intuitive understanding of an event and the variables most likely to impact on that event.

This type of theory, called a hypothetical deductive theory, is developed with few or no prior observations, and often requires the generation of new concepts to provide adequate explanation. Freud's theory of personality fits this definition. It required that he create concepts such as "id," "ego" and "superego" to explain psychological interactions and motivations.
Because they are not developed from existing facts, hypothetical-deductive theories must be continually tested in the "real world" to develop a database that will support them. Einstein's theory of relativity is an excellent example of this type of theory; it was first advanced in 1905 and is still being tested and refined through research today.

Most theories are formulated using a combination of both inductive and hypothetical deductive processes. Observations initiate the theoretical premise, and then hypotheses derived from the theory are tested.

As researchers go back and forth in the process of building and testing the theory, concepts are redefined and restructured. This process occurs along a circular continuum between fact and theory, whereby a theory can be built on facts, but must also be tested by them.


CHARACTERISTICS OF THEORIES


A theory should provide a thorough and rational explanation of observed facts. It should provide a basis for classifying relevant variables and predicting their relationships.

A theory should also provide a means for its own verification; that is, it should be sufficiently developed and clear enough to permit deductions that form testable hypotheses.

A Good Theory Is Economical. It should be the most efficient explanation of the phenomenon, using only those concepts that are truly relevant and necessary to the explanation offered by the theory.




Complex theories are difficult to interpret and less likely to provide meaningful direction to practice or research. Theories are also most useful when they apply to a broad range of situations, not one specific segment of a discipline.

A Theory Should Be Important. It should reflect that which is judged significant by those who will use it. In this sense, theories become the mirror of a profession's values and identity.

Acceptance of Theory Can Change. Theories must be consistent with observed facts and the already established body of knowledge. Therefore, our acceptance of a particular theory will reflect the present state of knowledge and must adapt to changes in that knowledge as technology and scientific evidence improve.

Therefore, a theory is only a tentative explanation of phenomena. It should be reasonable according to what has been observed, but may not be the only explanation. Many theories that are accepted today will be discarded tomorrow.
Some will be "disproved" by new evidence, and others may be superseded by new theories that integrate the older ones.
For example, Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences challenged long-held assumptions about general intelligence and the ability to measure it with a single score, such as an IQ test.

He proposes eight distinct intelligences and suggests that different cultures will perceive these differently.


Theory Testing



When we speak of testing a theory, we should realize that a theory itself is not testable. The validity of a theory is derived through the empirical testing of hypotheses that are deduced from it and from observation of the phenomenon the theory describes.

The hypotheses predict the relationships of variables included in the theory. The results of research will demonstrate certain facts, which will either support or not support the hypothesis. If the hypothesis is supported, then the theory from which it was deduced is also supported.

When we compare the outcomes of individual research studies with predicted outcomes, we are always aware of the potential for dis-confirmation of the underlying theory. In essence, the more that research does not dis-confirm a theory, the more the theory is supported.



This may sound backwards, but in actuality we can never "prove" or "confirm" a theory. We can only demonstrate that a theoretical premise does not hold true in a specific situation.

When a research hypothesis is tested and it is not rejected, that is, the study turns out the way we expected, we cannot state that the underlying theory is definitely true.

To make such a statement, we would have to verify every possible application of the theory and demonstrate that the outcomes were absolutely consistent. As this is not feasible, we can only interpret individual hypotheses and conclude that a theory has not been disproved.

5 TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL RESEARCH PROJECTS

Are you overwhelmed by the thought of doing a research project with your elementary students? I understand. Research projects cover a large variety of standards, can be difficult to keep organized, and can be even more difficult to find resources for that all students can read. I have found some tricks to make research projects much easier. These tips will help streamline the process so that ALL of your students will be successful, including students that struggle to write complete sentences. Use these tips to make your elementary research projects engaging, motivating, and enjoyable again!




#1: HAVE VERY CLEAR EXPECTATIONS.
Successful elementary research projects require a lot of upfront planning. It's important that you know exactly what you expect from students ahead of time. Otherwise, both you and your students will be frustrated. Kids thrive on knowing what to expect, so taking the time up front to figure this out will definitely pay off! I like to provide students with RUBRICS for their writing that are clearly aligned to the standards. I also MODEL every step of the process with them before expecting them to do it on their own. For my third graders, our research project was often their first experience with true research. I wanted to make sure their first experience was a positive one... and clear expectations was the foundation for their success!

#2: HAVE SHORT WORK PERIODS WITH A CLEAR FOCUS. 
Successful elementary research projects also require TIME. One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was trying to squeeze too much into a short block of time. This resulted in a poor experience for everyone. Our kids might have built up a stamina to read quietly for a longer period of time, but research is a much more intense process. My students work best when I break the project apart into smaller MINI-LESSONS that are spread out over a longer period of time.

#3: PROVIDE SCAFFOLDING FOR STRUGGLING LEARNERS SO ALL STUDENTS CAN BE SUCCESSFUL. 
Successful elementary research projects require SCAFFOLDING embedded in the process so that all students can be successful. One way to scaffold for students is to provide research materials for them at a VARIETY OF READING LEVELS. I have found some great leveled materials through the Reading A-Z website.
Another way to scaffold for students is to provide sentence and paragraph frames for students that need them. SENTENCE FRAMES give students a framework to follow in order to write a complete sentence on the proper topic. They also are wonderful for providing language support for students on IEPs or English Language Learners. I use them a lot in my classroom to help students explain their thinking during class discussions, so they are familiar with this type of scaffolding. PARAGRAPH FRAMES are similar and help students write an organized paragraph. Some students are able to generate sentences well, but have a difficult time writing a cohesive paragraph.

#4: HAVE A CLEAR ORGANIZATION SYSTEM IN PLACE. 
Successful elementary research projects also require a CLEAR SYSTEM FOR STAYING ORGANIZED. One of the easiest ways I have found is to give every student a FILE FOLDER that is specifically for their research materials. It also works to fold a large 11x17 piece of construction paper in half.
Another helpful organizational tool for research projects are ENVELOPES. I like to give each student one envelope per body paragraph, plus an additional one for resources. For example, if you are doing a biography research project, the envelopes might say: Early Life, Interesting Facts, Accomplishments, and Resources. Glue the front of the envelope inside the file folder so that the opening and flap is facing outward, then label the flap.

#5: ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO CREATE AUTHENTIC PRODUCTS. 
Successful elementary research projects also work best when students are encouraged to create authentic and engaging products. One of my favorite tips for biography research projects is to have students write a paragraph about the person they researched in FIRST-PERSON POINT OF VIEW. This can lead to many different authentic projects, including having a WAX MUSEUM or giving SPEECHES. Another fun idea is to have a FASHION SHOW - a perfect follow-up for learning about animal adaptations, for example. There are so many possibilities!

ABSTRACT
All the pages have been formatted in the accepted font and margin alignment. This is a simple MS thesis template that can be used for directly typing in your content. However, if you paste your text into the document, do so with caution as pasting could produce varying results. When directly typing into the title page and signature page, the appropriate information should be filled in the required fonts. If one chooses to include a copyright notice, it should appear before the signature page and after the title page (page ii).
This can be achieved by clicking Insert > break > page break >ok.
Additionally, the page number should not appear on the copyright notice page. This can be achieved by clicking Insert > page numbers > format > start numbering at. I have used this thesis template to answer typical questions that grad students need addressed before they begin writing their theses. When writing an abstract, bare in mind an abstract is a short descriptive summary of your thesis. The number of words accepted might vary e.g. 200-250 words. An MS thesis abstract need not exceed two pages. Abstracts are typically written last although they are the most important part of the thesis. They should have a little bit of everything: the background, the scope of your project, the purpose, findings and conclusions. An abstract is neither paragraphed nor cited. It should not be written as a literature review or a discussion of results. In a simplistic manner, your abstract, in a few words, should answer the questions: why should we care about your research; how did you get your results; what did you learn, find, create, invent; and finally what do your results imply?

CHAPTER I: Introduction 


The main goal of your introduction is to identify a problem that is worthy of investigation. It must also provide some idea of your research goals and approach to research. Specific objectives can be introduced in the introduction chapter or they can be saved for later after you’ve provided additional background on the topic and state of the current research and its gaps. The Introductory chapter often concludes with a summary of the organization of the thesis, including identification of the general content of specific chapters and appendices.

Ideally, chapter one defines the overall importance of the problem areas and provides an introduction into what you did, chapter two is why you did it in the context of what was previously known, three is how you did it, four is what you found and five is what it all means – putting the pieces together, (what’s your contribution to the research field).
It should be noted that the objectives of your research define the OUTCOME, i.e. what will be learned. They are not a statement of the approach or tasks that are required to meet these objectives. Some examples of reasonable research objectives:
• Determine the effect of Marangoni convection on mixing of molten glasses
• Predict the extent of mechanical degradation of polymers
These both define the resulting outcome (prediction, effect on…) so they are objectives. The related tasks or research approach could be:
• Solve a set of coupled non-linear PDEs…
• Perform experiments on…
These define the required steps; they do not define the outcome so they are NOT objectives.
Some theses and dissertations can have some chapters written as manuscripts that can be submitted to peer-reviewed scientific research journals. In that scenario, the grad student should be the principal author of the pending articles. The thesis or dissertation that includes manuscripts as chapters are not exempt from writing an introduction, background/ literature review and overall conclusions and recommendations.
This template uses the MS WORD STYLES extensively to help keep your work in the proper format. These paragraphs use the “thesis-body text” style that is set for Times New Roman, 12 point font with double spaced lines and extra spacing between paragraphs (no need for hard carriage returns). There are also styles for headers, equations, captions and bulleted lists that you can choose to use. See examples throughout this template.

CHAPTER II: Background and Literature Review


The background and literature review section needs to provide sufficient fundamental background information about the subject to support your objectives, hypothesis (or research questions) and methods, and review the pertinent literature related to the specific problem / hypothesis you are addressing. In Johnson (1991), some of the questions that he listed that the literature review should be to answer include:

• what are the fundamental science, math, engineering concepts related to your research (scope),
• what part of your research work has ever been investigated before and what has not, (some of this may have been included in the introduction)
• how does your research work relate to that done by others,
• how have others defined/measured/identified the key concepts of your research,
• what data sources have you used or have other researchers used in developing general explanations for observed variations in a behavior or phenomenon in a concept in your thesis etc.
The lit review (~20 pages or more) should not be limited to the above questions only. Ingeniousness and creativity is expected of a grad student.
Bullets can be single spaced. The above bullets are in the style “thesis-bullets.” When you type bulleted text, highlight the bulleted text and then select “thesis-bullets” from under the format, style menu to automatically change their formatting as above.
Section header
Given the length of each chapter, it is required to use headers and sub headers (possibly sub-sub headers). These can be numbered or one can just rely on different formats. The section headers in this document are labeled “heading 2” (“heading 1” was used for chapter titles). The heading styles formats should be consistent throughout the document as it helps significantly in creating the automatic table of contents.
Sub heading (heading 3)
The subheadings here have a different format (“heading 3”) than the section headers.
Sub-sub heading (heading 4)
You can even get to another level of headers, defined here as “heading 4.” The table of contents, however, is currently set up to just include three levels of headers.
Equations
Equations can be created in MS WORD equation editor or they can be created with other software. Equations should be numbered. They can be numbered within each chapter (e.g., 2.1, 2.2) or they can be numbered sequentially throughout the entire thesis. Equations should be indented or centered with the equation number to the right. The example below and associated “thesis-eqn” style can be used for all your equations.

This equation was written with the equation editor. Found through “insert, object, equation editor 3.0. The equation editor can also be found through “tools, customize, commands”, and in categories, look for insert and in the commands section, look for equation editor, drag and drop the icon onto the toolbar. This editor is fine for relatively simple equations, other options are available for more complex equations.

Tables
Tables should have meaningful information with descriptive headers. You can use the “thesis-table caption” style to define your captions and refer to the table in the text with a “cross reference” (Table 1). MS Word re-numbers table captions automatically when new tables inserted. But you need to right click on any cross references and “update field” if there are changes.

Format the table The formatting of the table can vary, including use of single space as appropriate. Most journals require that tables are formatted using table style “Table Simple 1” format.

Figures
Figures and illustrations are a necessary means of communicating technical information. Often times, figures included in the background/lit review section are copied from existing copyrighted information. In all cases, this is technically inappropriate without also receiving permission from the copyright owner. Citing the source of the figure is not sufficient. This rule is enforced for PhD dissertations because they are submitted to ProQuest for electronic access by others. The enforcement of this rule for MS theses is dependent on the specific committee members.
Resolution of figures is often a problem in theses. Resolution should be >300 dpi, preferably 600dpi (Figure 1).
You should note that saving images as jpeg files is a sure way to lower the resolution to an unacceptable extent. From experience, a good way is to copy your graphic (for example from PowerPoint or excel) and when pasting it into word, use the “paste special” “as an “enhanced metafile” (Figure 2). This also substantially reduces the resulting file size in comparison with pasting graphs in as excel graphics.

CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

In addition to the detailed methods you need to describe in this section, you need to provide specific objectives and an overview of your approach if they have not already been presented in the introductory chapters. The best place to put those items can vary among theses. Sometimes the background and lit review is really necessary to justify and substantiate the specific objectives and approach and, therefore, it is best to save those details for the beginning of this chapter.

These paragraphs are in “thesis-body text.” Other styles including captions, headers etc. can be used as presented in the previous chapter. Table 2 summarizes all of the styles that can be used with this template.

CHAPTER IV: RESULTS


Results, findings, discussion of results OR manuscripts. It is best to also reiterate information in your literature review to help substantiate the findings of your research.

This template is best used for directly typing in your content.

CHAPTER V: CONCLUSION

This chapter could also be called “Conclusions and Recommendations” or “Conclusions and Implications.” In general, there should be no new information presented here. It should be a synthesis of information that you’ve already discussed.

REFERENCES
Includes all references: articles, media facts, books, reports, regulations, internet articles, papers that you referenced from the text. In the text, citations can be (Bright and Moon, 2007) or Bright et al., 2007) (if more than two authors) if you wish to present your references alphabetically. Alternatively, you can include the citations in the text as a number [1] or 1 if you wish to present your references numerically. The computer software “End Notes” (Clarkson has a site license) or the MS WORD tools – “insert, reference, footnote, endnote” (or “cross reference” if you refer to the same reference more than once) should be used to help you organize and manage your references.
References can be written in single space with extra space between references as in the format below. There are many different ways to arrange the information and punctuation in a reference listing. The most important thing is to make sure all references are complete and that the format of your references is consistent throughout.
If you use the “thesis” reference” style you will get the proper line spacing and indent style without further changes.
Above are examples to show complete citation, other formats also acceptable.

Appendix A
Type or paste your appendices here. Appendices are a place to organize and include all of the “extra” material that is important to your research work but that is too detailed for the main text. Examples can include: specific analytical methods, computer code, spreadsheets of data, details of statistical analyses, etc. But, these materials do not speak for themselves. There should be a reference to these materials from the main chapters (complete details included in Appendix A) and there should be some text at the beginning of each appendix to briefly explain what the information is and means that is included in that appendix.

FINISHING YOUR PHD THESIS: TOP 15 TIPS




Many PhD students are now in the final struggle of writing their thesis. Turning years of research into a single, coherent piece of work can be tough, so here are some tips from supervisors and recent PhD graduates.
Below is a selection of the best tips.

1) Make sure you meet the PhD requirements for your institution

“PhD students and their supervisors often presume things without checking. One supervisor told his student that a PhD was about 300 pages long so he wrote 300 pages. Unfortunately the supervisor had meant double-spaced, and the student had written single-spaced. Getting rid of 40,000 extra words with two weeks to go is not recommended.” (Hannah Farrimond, lecturer in medical sociology, Exeter University)

2) Keep perspective

“Everyone wants their thesis to be amazing, their magnum opus. But your most important work will come later. Think of your PhD as an apprenticeship. Your peers are unlikely to read your thesis and judge you on it. They are more likely to read any papers (articles, chapters, books) that result from it.” (Dean D’Souza, PhD in cognitive neuroscience, Birkbeck, University of London)
3) Write the introduction last
“Writing the introduction and conclusion together will help to tie up the thesis together, so save it for the end.” (Ashish Jaiswal, PhD in business education, University of Oxford)

4) Use apps

“Trello is a project management tool (available as a smartphone app) which allows you to create ‘boards’ on which to pin all of your outstanding tasks, deadlines, and ideas. It allows you to make checklists too so you know that all of your important stuff is listed and to-hand, meaning you can focus on one thing at a time. 5) Address the unanswered questions

“There will always be unanswered questions – don’t try to ignore or, even worse, obfuscate them. On the contrary, actively draw attention to them; identify them in your conclusion as areas for further investigation. Your PhD viva will go badly if you’ve attempted to disregard or evade the unresolved issues that your thesis has inevitably opened up.” (Michael Perfect, PhD in English literature, University of Cambridge)

6) Buy your own laser printer

“A basic monochrome laser printer that can print duplex (two-sided) can be bought online for less than £100, with off-brand replacement toners available for about £30 a pop. Repeatedly reprinting and editing draft thesis chapters has two very helpful functions. Firstly, it takes your work off the screen and onto paper, which is usually easier to proof. 7) Checking is important

9) Make sure you know when it will end

10) Prepare for the viva

“Don’t just focus on the thesis – the viva is very important too and examiners’ opinions can change following a successful viva. 11) Develop your own style

“Take into account everything your supervisor has said, attend to their suggestions about revisions to your work but also be true to your own style of writing. What I found constructive was paying attention to the work of novelists I enjoy reading. It may seem that their style has nothing to do with your own field of research, but this does not matter. 12) Remember that more is not always better

13) Get a buddy

“Find a colleague, your partner, a friend who is willing to support you. Share with them your milestones and goals, and agree to be accountable to them. This doesn’t mean they get to hassle or nag you, it just means someone else knows what you’re up to, and can help to check if your planning is realistic and achievable.” (Cassandra Steer, PhD in criminology, University of Amsterdam)

14) Don’t pursue perfectionism

“Remember that a PhD doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. Nothing more self-crippling than perfectionism.” (Nathan Waddell, lecturer in modernist literature, Nottingham University)

15) Look after yourself

“Go outside. Work outside if you can. Fresh air, trees and sunshine do wonders for what’s left of your sanity.” (Helen Coverdale, PhD in law, LSE)
